Atte von Wright graduated in General Microbiology from the University of Helsinki (Finland) in 1975 and received his PhD from the University of Sussex (England) in 1981. His career includes positions both in industry and in different research institutions.

Currently he is Professor Emeritus (food biotechnology) from the University of Eastern Finland (Kuopio, Finland). Professor von Wright’s research interests include food toxicology, microbiology and molecular biology of lactic acid bacteria, probiotics and food fermentations.

He is also a former expert in the scientific panels of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) assessing the safety of microbiological feed additives, genetically modified organisms and microorganisms intended for the Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) status.
