The Innovation Zone at this year’s in-cosmetics Barcelona shines a light on innovation in sun care. Partnered by Mintel, the area will feature a selection of new products that illustrate how ingredients, packaging and claims differ from East to West. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample these products in twice-daily demonstrations led by Mintel analysts.
China and South Korea are set to experience some of the most robust growth in sun care by 2016 (+16.8% and +10.4% respectively). Below are recent examples of innovation from these two countries.
Shanghai’s Jialan Group launched a Whitening Sunscreen range for its Maysu brand. The line is formulated with whitening sunscreen factor Tinosorb M, aloe vera extract and ferulic acid. It claims to lastingly protect against UVA and UVB rays, fight free radicals, improve the appearance of melanin and dark spots. The Whitening Sun Blocker SPF 18 PA+ also contains liquorice extract and hyaluronic acid.
Also from China is a new Avon Naturals Whitening Sunscreen Lotion SPF 15 PA++. The product contains orange peel and liquorice root extracts. It offers UVA and UVB protection and claims to improve the appearance of dull and yellow looking skin.
This combination of sunscreen and whitening benefits is popular throughout Asia, including Korea. Ani Place Cute Girl Fresh Daily Daily Sun Protection SPF 50 PA+++ is described as a triple-functional sunscreen. It contains mild yet effective UV blocking ingredients, whitens skin with arbutin and contains adenosine for an anti-wrinkle benefit.
Other Korean beauty manufacturers are introducing innovations in segmentation, packaging and texture. TN Teen's Nature Sun Cream SPF 45 PA++ is designed for teenagers. The refreshing, mild sun cream contains bamboo water and aloe to relieve stress on the skin, and offer moisture and nourishment. It comes in a flat pebble-shaped orange bottle.
Enprani introduced a UV Airy Sun Mousse for its SEP brand. The product offers SPF 30 PA++ protection and comes in a silver 100ml aerosol canister. This spray mousse format, first launched in 2001 and later adopted by Nivea, is re-emerging in new sun protection products.
Organic and free-from claims are emerging too. Rojukiss Field Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++ contains organic, GMO-free ingredients and is free from mineral oil, talc and alcohol. The hydrating sunscreen is designed to protect skin from strong sunlight and UVA and UVB rays.
Danahan Ecopure Perfect UV Block SPF 50+ PA+++ is made with an Ecocert-certified complex of nine herbs. The product offers high UV protection and claims the herb complex helps soothe sun-exposed, tired skin and offers a healthy glow. It is free from parabens, benzophenone, tar, animal oil and animal ingredients.
